Highlights from the 2023/24 Student Survey!

Last year, the wait for a Research Consultation was too long!
In response, we have hired a new Research Librarian! Now, the wait is generally no more than a couple of business days. You can schedule an appointment here or on the library homepage.
We need more science journals! 🧪🧫🧬
Actually, we already have a good deal of access to journals, including one mentioned by name: the Journal of Genetic Counseling! You can view these by doing a general search in our catalog OR by referencing specific databases such as ProQuest, Science Direct, and PubMed.
🎭 We need more play scripts! 🎭
Good news—we have a LOT. You can find a hard copy by searching in our catalog, though it may help if you begin with an advanced search to indicate title and author. We also have a database which provides access to 22,000+ of digital scripts called New Play Exchange!
Some of you requested a Library Tour and general info session for First Years.
Good news—we do that! We are fully integrated into the First Year Experience week and have many additional workshops in the Fall. We also provide library tours at the beginning and workshops throughout the Spring semester!
There was also interest in Citation Workshops.
We also do that! We will generally provide at least one citation workshop of some kind each semester. If it doesn’t fit your schedule, we would love to help you by scheduling a research consultation. Unfortunately, the citation workshop for this semester has already happened. Keep a look-out next semester in the SLC Involvement emails!
🔈 Improved study and group space! 🔊
We also had many requests on both sides for silent study space and group study space that allows more conversational noise. In response, we have posted signage on each floor to describe noise level expectations. The lower level signs are green and are designated a Talking Zone where the expectation is for voices to be at an average talking volume. The main level is the yellow zone which is designated a Quiet Zone, with expectations that conversations would be in muted voices. The upper level is the red zone which is designated a Silent Zone with expectations that there be no talking at all aside from what naturally must happen in the Pillow Room and the main level’s front desk. This, unfortunately, will bleed over to some areas of the floor.
🎨 More student art displayed in the library!
Great news—we’re partnering with students and VASA for art exhibits! You can submit your request to have your work displayed through this google form. We have also provided space for any student to submit turtle art on the board by the turtles. 🐢🐢
🪑 There were also requests to upgrade our seating in the building 🪑
This is a daunting task, unfortunately, we can only make slow changes. We’ve now added 2 bean bag chairs to a study nook on the upper level, and the E1 classroom also has new swivel chairs! If you ever notice that any furniture is BROKEN, please let us know! We can usually get items repaired.
🎙️Podcast requests!🎧
Some requested more interviews with authors and creators. This year has been a BIG YEAR for our Faculty Spotlight, which is also recorded as a podcast. Here’s a link to the SLC Podcast through Spotify and Apple so you can look to see who we’ve interviewed so far.
Someone suggested that we advertise the publishing of episodes in the SLC Involvement emails. We’ve advertised Faculty Spotlight events, but will now begin advertising releases of each episode in your daily/weekly emails!
MANY of you requested more podcasts with students, and we have delivered! Here’s a linked list of guests AND hosts we’ve had so far.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) FAQs 📙📦🏛️🚚🏛️📦📙
(I couldn’t resist an emoji journey of a book—forgive me.)
Here are some of the ILL basics that could help you before you even begin a project, but a full tutorial is available here. Email [email protected] with any questions.
How long can I borrow an ILL item?
The loan period for an ILL book is determined by the lending library. Typically this can be anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks. The due date for any ILL item will be clearly marked on a label on the front cover. You can request to renew items in your Library Account any time before it’s due date.
How long does it take to receive a request?
ILL requests for physical, returnable items (print books, DVDs, etc.) can take anywhere between 1-4 weeks to arrive. Journal articles/book chapters typically take between 1-7 business days. You can also check the status of your request at any time in your Library Account.
Is there anything I can NOT get through ILL?
Anything that we already own; this includes items checked out, on reserve, or in our Reference Collection (which should all be shared according to their respective circulation policies). However, patrons are welcome to obtain a Westchester Public Library or New York Public Library card borrow items directly or through their ILL departments.
Items that do not circulate at lending libraries, such as streaming media and archival materials, also cannot be checked out through ILL.
